User-centered design (UCD) is a design process where the end-user’s needs, wants and limitations are taken into consideration at all stages within the design process and development lifecycle. Users are involved in providing constant feedback and improve the design. The process can be broken into 3-4 phases – Concept generation, Requirement gathering, Design, Development and Testing

Predesign stage:

* Know the user: individual characteristics, current and desired tasks, functional analysis, evolution of the user and the job

* Competitive analysis

* Setting usability goals; financial impact analysis

Design stage:

* Parallel design

* Participatory design

* Coordinated design

* Guidelines and heuristic analysis

* Prototyping

* Empirical testing

* Iterative design; capture design rationale

Post design stage:

* Collect feedback from field use

* Figure out who’s going to use the system to do what

* Choose representative tasks for task-centered design

* Plagiarize (using parts of old designs)

* Rough out a design

* Think about it

* Create a mock-up or a prototype

* Test it with users

* Iterate

* Build it

* Track it

* Change it
